- Choices
You do now know where your decisions come from. They pop up like hiccups. and when you make a decision...People have a great deal of anxiety about making decisions, 'Did I think this over long enough? Did I take enough data into consideration?' And if you think it through you find you never could take enough data into consideration, the data for a decision in any given situation is infinite. So what you do is you go through the motions of thinking about out what you will do about this, but worriers are people who think of all the variables beyond their control, and what might happen!...
Choice is the act of hesitation that we make before making a decision, it is a mental wobbling, and so we are always in a dither of doubt as to whether we are behaving the right way, doing the right thing, and so on and so forth, and lack a certain kind of self confidence. And if you see you lack self confidence, you will make mistakes through sheer fumbling. If you do have self confidence you may get carried away doing the entirely the wrong thing. You have to regard yourself as a cloud, in the flesh, because you see clouds never makes mistakes. Did you ever see a cloud that was misshapen? Did you ever see a badly designed wave? Heh, no they always do the right thing! But if will treat yourself for awhile as a cloud, a wave, and realize that you can't make a mistake, whatever you do. Because even if you do something that seems to be totally disastrous, it all come out in the wash somehow or other.
Then through this capacity you will develop a kind of confidence, and through confidence you will be able to trust your own intuition.
- From Truth
My goodness, don’t you remember?
When you went first to school,
You went to kindergarten.
And in kindergarten, the idea was to push along so that you could get into first grade.
And then push along so that you could get into second grade, third grade and so on,
Going up and up.
And then you went to high school and this was a great transition in life.
And now the pressure is being put on,
- Give it away and it will come back
'That what I want, basically, what I really want, is what you want. And I don't know what you want.
Surprise me'.
But that's the kinship between "I" and "thou". So when I ask, I go right down to the question, which we started with: "What do I want?"
The answer is "I don't know".
When Bodhidharma was asked, "Who are you?" which is another form of the same question, he said "I don't know". Planting flowers to which the butterflies come, Bodhidharma says "I know not".
- How to not be killed by Death
"You have to get away from all that madness for a while because we become insane, we get confused with our roles, as being who we really are. Man is not his role. Man is something deeper than that. So, go into the forest or some place alone in nature, all by yourself, and find out who you really are! And when you no longer confuse yourself with your particular temporary body, but identify with the entire process of nature and the whole cosmos.. When death comes, what a funny thing that will happen. Death comes, and will find no one to kill." - Alan Watts
- If you awaken from this illusion
If you awaken from this illusion and you understand that black implies white, self implies other, life implies death (or shall I say death implies life?), you can feel yourself – not as a stranger in the world, not as something here unprobational, not as something that has arrived here by fluke - but you can begin to feel your own existence as absolutely fundamental.
I am not trying to sell you on this idea in the sense of converting you to it, I want you to play with it. I want you to think of its possibilities, I am not trying to prove it. I am just putting it forward as a possibility of life to think about. So then, let’s suppose that you were able every night to dream any dream you wanted to dream, and that you could for example have the power within one night to dream 75 years of time, or any length of time you wanted to have.
And you would, naturally, as you began on this adventure of dreams, you would fulfill all your wishes. You would have every kind of pleasure during your sleep. And after several nights of 75 years of total pleasure each you would say “Well that was pretty great”. But now let’s have a surprise, let’s have a dream which isn’t under control, where something is gonna happen to me that I don’t know what it's gonna be.
And you would dig that and would come out of that and you would say “Wow that was a close shave, wasn’t it?”. Then you would get more and more adventurous and you would make further- and further-out gambles what you would dream. And finally, you would dream where you are now. You would dream the dream of living the life that you are actually living today.

- Motivation
This is therefore to say that the transformation of human consciousness through meditation is frustrated so long as we think of it as something that I by myself can bring about, by some sort of wangle, by some sort of gimmick. Because you see it leads to endless games of spiritual one-up-manship. And of guru competition. Of my guru being more effective than your guru. My yogas are faster than your yoga. I am more aware of myself than you are. I am humbler than you are. I am sorrier for my sins than you are. I love you more than you love me. There’s this interminable goings on where people fight and wonder whether they are a bit more evolved than somebody else and so on.
All that can just fall away. And then we get this strange feeling that we’ve never had in our lives except occasionally by accident. Some people get a glimpse that we are no longer this poor little stranger and afraid in a world it never made. But that you ARE this universe. And you are creating it at every moment. Because you see it starts now. It didn’t begin in the past. There was no past. If the universe began in the past, when that happened it was now. But it is still now and the universe is still beginning now and it’s trailing off like the wake of a ship from now and as the wake of the ship fades out, so does the past. You can look back there to explain things but the explanation disappears. You will never find it there. Things are not explained by the past. They’re explained by what happens now. That creates the past. And it begins here." ~Alan Watts.
- Nothing
So if you really go the how way and see how you feel at the prospect of vanishing forever. Of all your efforts, and all your achievements, and all your attainments turning into dust and nothingness. What is the feeling? What happens to you?
That’s what it’s all going to come dfgdfg to.
And for some reason, we are supposed to find that depressing. But if somebody is going to argue that the basic reality is nothingness. Where does all this come from? Obviously from nothingness. Once again you get how this looks behind your eyes. So cheer up you see, this is what is meant in Buddhist philosophy by saying ‘we are all basically nothing.
So I’m detached, calm, and pure headed. Buddha-ed. But the one who won the contest said there is no mirror, and the nature of mind is intrinsically void. So where is there anywhere for dust to collect? See so in this way, by seeing that nothingness is the fundamental reality, and you see it’s your reality. Then how can anything contaminate you?
All the idea of being scared, and it’s nothing it just a dream. Because your really nothing. But this is most incredible nothing.
Nothingness is really like the nothingness of space, which contains the whole universe. All the sun and the stars and mountains, and rivers, and goodmen and bad men, and the animals, and insects, and the whole bit. All are contained in void. So out of this void comes everything and you it. What else could you be?
Which is sort of blind emptiness. See if you think of this idea of nothingness as blankness, and you hold onto this idea of blankness then kind of grizzly about it, you haven’t understood it.Nothingness is really like the nothingness of space, which contains the whole universe. All the sun and the stars and mountains, and rivers, and goodmen and bad men, and the animals, and insects, and the whole bit. All are contained in void. - The Dream Of Life
If you awaken from this illusion and you understand that black implies white, self implies other, life implies death (or shall I say death implies life?), you can feel yourself – not as a stranger in the world, not as something here unprobational, not as something that has arrived here by fluke - but you can begin to feel your own existence as absolutely fundamental.

- The Mercy of Nature
Change... and everything is change, nothing can be held on to.
To the degree that you go with a stream, you see, you are still... you are flowing with it.
But to the degree you resist the stream, then you notice… that the current is rushing past you and fighting you.
So swim with it... go with it... and you're there… you're at rest.
- The Real You
If you’re ready to wake up, you’re going to wake up and if you’re not ready, you’re going to stay pretending that you're just “poor little me”.
And since you're all here and engaged in this sort of inquiry and listening to this sort of lecture, I
assume that you’re all on the process of waking up or else you’re teasing yourself with some kind of flirtation with waking up which you’re not serious about.
But I assume maybe you are not serious, but sincere that you are ready to wake up. So then, when you’re in the way of waking up and finding out who you really are, what you do is what the whole universe is doing at the place you call here and now.
You are something the whole universe is doing in the same way that a wave is something that the whole ocean is doing.
