They shun her home as if it were plagued.
My sister has a tender heart;
To bring peace back to the village,
On a freezing winter’s eve,
She has agreed to become your wife.
The wolves shall be her faithful retinue,
The grasses shall dry her tears;
But I am no simpleton to be trifled with—
I will not surrender my sister to you.
I will drink the poisonous draught myself,
And take her bridal attire as my own—
A circlet woven of rowan branches—
And come to you for the wedding rite.
