Ентомологи (комахознавці) завжди стають колекціонерами. Притому колекціонерами за суттю – вони колекціонують все, навіть пригоди і враження, й уміло їх систематизують. Ботаніки є різні. Одні перетворюються майже на філологів, інші стають ерудованими практиками – городниками, садівниками, грибарями і квітникарями, а треті стають просто знавцями всіх закапелків якогось реґіону, знають точно, де що росте.
Окрема категорія – це всі фахівці, що працюють з мікроскопом. Свої дивноти виробляються у герпетологів, іхтіологів і фізіологів. Але цілком окремо стоять орнітологи – ті, хто пильнує за птахами. Вирішити бути орнітологом – вже ознака нестійкої психіки. Орнітологів можна вирізнити одразу і безпомилково. Вони неповторні. їх щось відриває від землі до неба. Вони, напевно, запрягають птахів у невідомо що і їздять десь там цими упряжами. Орнітологи не бачать землі – лиш небо, верхів'я дерев. Це їхнє коріння. Подумайте самі: рахувати тисячні зграї, які рухаються, за їх контурами, вираховувати маршрути між нами і Африкою, кільцювати зловлених птахів і діставати телеграми з острова Яви, якщо ця птаха там умре, відрізняти двадцять відтінків рожевого на пір'ячку, яке на черевці.
Вичисляти гнізда, різновеликі і різнокольорові яйця. Постійно дивитися у біноклі, лорнети і прозорні труби. Знати, на яку електричку сісти, щоб застати міґруючу зграю на певній станції. Це все не сприяє нормальному психічному станові.
Я знаю це з власного досвіду співіснування з птахами: дрозди об'їли ягоди з кущів, які оббирав я, ворони завжди сиділи на будинку перед моїм вікном, горобці не пускали ластівок у їхні гнізда на моїм балконі, грач втопився у моїй бочці з водою, ворона жила у мене довший час, мої діти знайшли замерзлого папугу, який потім вільно літав по цілій хаті, бузько, знесилений перельотом, упав на мій пост в армії, голуби, яких сусіди смажили на суботу, журавель, який прилетів до мого лісу через бомбардовану Сербію, ворони, в яких я забирав горіхи в армії… Якщо рослини – це поняття, тварини – образи, то птахи – символи і знаки. Я не здивувався, що знайомий орнітолог став теологом. Бо птахи чимось подібні на ангелів.

Biology can be just the basis for everything a head needs. But today I met many years later a classmate of biology, who changed his profession, and remembered the whole system of his observations on the influence of various biological sciences on the psyche.
Entomologists (insect scientists) always become collectors. Moreover, collectors in essence - they collect everything, even adventures and impressions, and skillfully systematize them. Botanists are different. Some become almost philologists, others become erudite practitioners - gardeners, gardeners, mushroom pickers and florists, and others become just connoisseurs of all the droplets of a region, know exactly where something grows.
A separate category is all specialists working with a microscope. Herpetologists, ichthyologists and physiologists work out their wonders. But ornithologists stand alone - those who watch over the birds. Deciding to be an ornithologist is already a sign of an unstable psyche. Ornithologists can be distinguished immediately and without error. They are unique. something tears them from the earth to the sky. They probably harness birds to the unknown and go somewhere there with these harnesses. Ornithologists do not see the earth - only the sky, the tops of trees. This is their root. Think for yourself: count the thousands of flocks moving along their contours, calculate the routes between us and Africa, ring the captured birds and get telegrams from the island of Java, if this bird dies there, distinguish twenty shades of pink on the feathers on the belly.
Calculate nests, eggs of different sizes and colors. Constantly look through binoculars, binoculars and transparent tubes. Know which train to take to catch a migrating flock at a particular station. All this does not contribute to a normal mental state.
I know this from my own experience of coexisting with birds: thrushes ate berries from the bushes I picked, crows always sat on the house in front of my window, sparrows would not let swallows into their nests on my balcony, the rook drowned in my barrel of water, the crow lived with me for a long time, my children found a frozen parrot, which then flew freely around the house, buzzing, exhausted by the flight, fell on my post in the army, pigeons, which neighbors roasted on Saturday, a crane that flew into my forest through the bombed Serbia, crows, in which I took nuts in the army… If plants - a concept animals - images, the birds - symbols and signs. I was not surprised that a familiar ornithologist became a theologian. Because birds are something like angels.
