- Arc of Life
Do we need forgiveness
Do we need applause
Do we need some faint hope
Life had a greater cause
It’s the arc of life
And it’s ours alone
It’s the only thing we write
That’s almost writ in stone
- California Has No Winter
You won’t see the leaves fall, there’s no snow at all
Time is only a clock, no need to take stock
You’re in the summer of life, you’ve got a California wife
California has no winter
There’s no hail or sleet, just California backbeat
It starts when you begin, time ticks under the skin
There’s no telling sign, to prove to you it’s nearly time
- Hard Time
You wrote me an easy 50
That’s something we could talk about
What you thought then
And what came about
You said it was hard to leave me
You never would have thought
The day we would end
- Jane
It was bleak, living without you
You were already leaving when she was ten
And it never got better ‘cause her Dad left too
And then the new family was when
She learned how the world could undo
The beauty you both tried to give her
And what grief and madness can do
And what grief and madness can do
- Only in Her Dreams
In the lobby as she waited for the door to let her in
In the hours before her meeting like a solitary sin
She rationalized her heart with another glass of wine
And scattered her resistance, pretending she was fine
This romance held a knife to her throat all the time
She knew it was unforgiving once you started down the line
That it would stand there naked and hold a petal to her breast
- Poetry
If I knew what had sent you
Could I ask it to remain?
If I witnessed all your thoughts
Would they always be the same?
If I looked down at your shadow
Would it always touch the ground?
If it had no other reason
Would it always be around?
- Rising Up Again
I come from a very nice town
A place she calls her home
I remember times not so good
Standing in a different neighborhood
My daughter says
It’s a special place
Maybe that is true
But I like to think we’re getting better
- Simplify
(Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh)
You left your job to calm the voices in your head
Took long drives instead of laying awake in bed
You left that world you didn’t need anymore
There’s not much left when you ain’t keeping score
They can’t win if you’re determined to be last
You can’t lose if you’re not clinging to your past
- Waving Free
The life you lead will sometimes turn to lead you somewhere else
The time you spend with anyone is still time you spend yourself
We don’t know how our songs will sound in someone’s else’s ear
Or whether the thoughts we share are heard very clear
There isn’t much that you will do, that is really very wrong
As long as you care for others, down the road you walk so long
Sometimes it feels like no one cares
Sometimes it’s a sinking stone
